The Navamsa chart, also known as the D-9 chart, is the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology. It is the essential component that the Rasi chart cannot function without. Where the Rasi chart represents the physical body (Sthool), the D-9 represents the astral body (Sookshma). Reading a chart without consulting the Navamsa is incomplete, as the Navamsa forms the foundation of your identity.
What is the Navamsa?
The word Navamsa comes from Sanskrit, Nava (nine) and Amsa (division). It is the 1/9th division of a zodiac sign. It is created by dividing each 30-degree zodiac sign into 9 equal parts of exactly 3°20 arc. The Navamsa is representative of the soul, the inner nature itself. It is not a chart that determines just one area of your life; it reveals the inner quality of everything that the Rashi chart unravels. Therefore, Maharishi Parashara in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra simultaneously refers to the D-9 chart alongside the main Rasi chart. These two charts are read together in Vedic astrology. The Navamsa reveals whether the inner reality is in favour of what the Rasi chart promises.
Navamsa and Marriage: The Indicator of Spouse and Partnerships
The Navamsa chart is the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology for determining all aspects of marriage, intimate partnerships and more. While the main Rasi (D-1) chart indicates the overarching themes of marriage, the D-9 reveals the more intricate details and the inner dynamic between two people. It focuses more on how the relationship will feel from the inside. Because marriage is considered a sacred duty, the Navamsa is also called Dharmamsa.
Here is how the D-9 chart is analyzed for marriage:
The Navamsa Lagna
Just as your Rasi Lagna describes your outer personality and physical constitution, the Navamsa Lagna is representative of your inner nature, your sense of dharma and the characteristics of your “soulmate”. It reflects the qualities that emerge when your outer persona falls off. It also portrays your inner attitude towards your marriage and relationships. The placement of the lagna lord is supremely important as it determines the quality of your marriage. If it occupies the Ascendant of the main Rasi chart, your own personality will dominate the marriage, forcing your spouse to make space for your personal growth. If the Navamsa lagna falls in a dushthana within the Navamsa, it causes aggression and disconnects within the marital bond.
The 7th House in Navamsa
While the 7th house in the Rasi chart is often consulted, the 7th house in the Navamsa is a placement of utmost importance for marriage. It pinpoints the exact nature of your spouse, their physical characteristics and the core nature of your bond. The planets occupying, or aspecting, the 7th house of the Navamsa determine your partner’s traits.
Benefic Planets in the Navamsa: Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon strengthen the marriage, ensuring harmony, mutual respect and building compatibility. They point towards a spouse whose qualities add to their partner’s growth and well-being, and not restrict it.
Malefic Planets in the Navamsa: Malefic planets in the Navamsa indicate complexity. However, it doesn’t ultimately determine a difficult marriage. Saturn can produce deeply committed relationships, and Mars can bring extreme passion and loyalty to relationships. But it does mean that these relationships will not be confined to comfortable boundaries. They will be challenging and will require conscious efforts, and will significantly contribute towards the soul’s growth.
The Condition of Venus
Venus is the primary significator of marriage; its dignity in the D-9 chart is an important factor to determine the quality of marriage.
If Venus is placed in a Dushthana (6th, 8th, 12th house) from the Navamsa Lagna, tension from outside contacts and acquaintances will affect the marriage. If Venus occupies a Navamsa of Mars or Saturn, one may have adulterous tendencies.
If Venus occupies an exalted Navamsa, one enjoys immense marital joys, a devoted partner and good fortune. On the contrary, a debilitated Venus in the Navamsa indicates conflicts and continuous tension in the marriage.
Dashas and Transits
The D-9 chart is crucial to determine the timing of marriage, using Dasas (planetary periods) and transits:
Dasha and Antardasha Lords: For a marriage to take place, the operating Dasha and Antara lords must establish a relationship with the Navamsa, the 7th house of the Navamsa or their respective lords. The Dasha of Venus (primary significator) or the Moon are highly influential for consulting marriage.
Jupiter’s Transit: Another exceptionally reliable timing technique is the transit of Jupiter. It is considered a favourable time for marriage when Jupiter transits over the 7th house of the birth chart or particularly over the Navamsa sign occupied by the 7th Lord or its trines.
Special Planetary Placements in the Navamsa
Vargottama Planets
A planet is considered Vargottama when it occupies the same zodiac sign in the Rasi chart and the Navamsa (D-9) chart. This specific alignment proves to be very auspicious, providing outstanding, beneficial results during its periods and transits. If the Ascendant is Vargottama, it makes the entire chart favourable, bestowing one with high social status, respect and fame.
Pushkar Navamsa
Out of the 108 Navamsas, 24 are known to be Pushkar Navamsa. They are highly auspicious and are ruled by natural benefics. (Moon, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter). Planets placed in Pushkar Navamsa are highly beneficial and bring a splurge of good fortune, wealth and success. However, there is an exception where if the Pushkar Navamsa occupied falls into a 6th, 8th or 12th house of the main Rasi chart, the positive effects are cancelled and one may suffer from health issues.
Planets in Exaltation in Debilitation in the Navamsa
The relationship between the Rasi chart and the Navamsa chart determines if a planet’s effects will be realised in an individual’s life. A planet that is exalted in the Rasi chart but debilitated in the Navamsa will struggle to deliver what it promises. For example, if Saturn is exalted in the Rasi but debilitated in the Navamsa, it grants a temporary period of happiness during the beginning of its Dasa (planetary period) but causes severe suffering towards the end. Conversely, if a planet is debilitated in the Rasi chart but exalted in the Navamsa, it leads to a cancellation of debility (Neechbhanga Rajyoga). This brings sudden success in career and social status.
Combustion and Retrogression
If a planet is combust in the natal chart, its weakness travels across all divisional charts, including the D-9. During the planetary period (Dasha) of a combust planet, the individual may face a significant loss of wealth, social status and health issues.
The state of retrogression entirely alters how a planet behaves in the Navamsa. A debilitated planet that is also retrograde behaves as though it is exalted, whereas an exalted planet that is also retrograde behaves as though it is debilitated.
Key Houses To Analyse Within the Navamsa
When reading the D-9 chart independently, specific houses carry specialized meaning:
1st House (Navamsa Lagna): The 1st house represents your true self, your inner nature and your general attitude towards relationships while also revealing marriage plans.
7th House: The 7th house is the primary house of marriage, and it reveals the spouse’s physical characteristics, their nature and the quality of your dynamic with them.
8th House: The 8th house is the 2nd house from the 7th house. It dictates the length of the married life and also indicates the ending of a relationship.
9th House: The 9th house is the “seed” of the Navamsa chart. It represents your adherence to dharma, your duty and obligations and the spiritual aspects of marriage.
12th House: The 12th house indicates intimacy, bed pleasures, expenses and potential splits in a relationship. Additionally, the 12th house from the Karakamsa reveals the Ishta Devata, the guiding deity that leads the individual towards final emancipation (Moksha)
