What is the Arudha Lagna?
The Arudha Lagna (AL) is a calculated point in the Vedic birth chart that reveals how your identity is perceived by the outside world. It tells you about the image others form of you, the persona that emerges in society and in your profession and the shape your public reputation tends to take over a lifetime.
Mathematically, it is what Vedic astrology calls the Arudha of the 1st house. In Vedic astrology, every house in your chart has two sides: the underlying reality of that area of life, and the version of it that actually shows up in the outside world, that is the outer form others can see and interact with. That outer form is called the Arudha. The house is the reality; the Arudha is the image or reflection of that house.
Your 1st house, the Ascendant (Lagna), governs your core identity; your instincts, your temperament, your natural way of engaging with life. Its Arudha, the Arudha Lagna, is how all of that is perceived by the world outside of you.
How To Calculate Your Arudha Lagna
To calculate Arudha Lagna, you have to follow a few simple steps:
Find your Ascendant (Rising Sign) and identify its ruling planet.
Count how many zodiac signs separate your Rising Sign from the sign where its ruling planet is placed.
From your ruling planet's sign, count forward the same number of signs. The sign you arrive at is your Arudha Lagna.
For example: Suppose your Rising Sign is Libra. Libra is ruled by Venus. Venus is placed in Capricorn. Count from Libra (1): Scorpio (2) ,Sagittarius (3), Capricorn (4). Venus is 4 signs away from Libra. Now count 4 signs forward from Capricorn (1): Aquarius (2) , Pisces (3) , Aries (4). Your Arudha Lagna is Aries.

Exceptions
An Arudha cannot fall in the 1st or the 7th house from its original sign. The 1st and the 7th houses from any sign represent Satya or the ultimate truth. As Arudha represents Maya or illusion, it is entirely disconnected from the truth. An illusion cannot coexist with the truth, therefore an Arudha can never fall in the 1st or the 7th house from its beginning point.
If the Arudha falls in the 1st house from the original sign, the 10th house is taken into consideration.
If the Arudha falls in the 7th house from the original sign, then the 4th house is taken into consideration.

Is Arudha Lagna the same as the ascendant?
No. The ascendant (Lagna) represents your core identity and approach to life, while Arudha Lagna represents how the world perceives you. They are entirely different from each other.
Can Arudha Lagna change over time?
Your Arudha Lagna is fixed at birth, just like your Lagna and Moon sign. What can shift over time is how strongly that public image expresses itself, depending on planetary periods and life circumstances.
