Some phases in your life have observed effortless success with career, relationships, social status and more. On the other hand, there have been periods where things would just not go according to plan. You might have wondered why some periods bring so many favourable events while others don’t. In Vedic astrology, this is brought about by the Vimshottari Dasha system, which divides your entire life into planetary time periods.
Your Dasha reveals the planet that is influencing your life currently and how it shapes various aspects of your life, such as relationships, career, emotions and major milestones. Our free Vimshottari Dasha Calculator helps you get a better look at these planetary cycles. Just enter your birth details, and the tool reveals your exact Dasha sequence so you can prepare ahead and align with the most favourable timing in life.
What is the Vimshottari Dasha System?
The Vimshottari Dasha system is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology. The word Vimshottari means 120 in Sanskrit, which is the length of one complete cycle in years. This cycle is divided across 9 planets.
| Planet | Time-Period |
|---|---|
| Sun | 6 years |
| Moon | 10 years |
| Mars | 7 years |
| Mercury | 17 years |
| Jupiter | 16 years |
| Saturn | 19 years |
| Rahu | 18 years |
| Ketu | 7 years |
Your beginning point in this cycle begins at the planet ruling the constellation (Nakshatra) your moon occupied at birth. This makes everybody’s timeline unique. Each planetary period brings the significations of that planet forward. The house the planet rules, its strength in your chart and the planets it is associated with, all collectively determine what that period will mean for you.
What is Mahadasha?
Mahadasha is the major planetary period or cycle. In the Vimshottari system, your first Mahadasha is determined by the specific constellation the moon occupied at the time of your birth. The Mahadasha sets the overall theme of a long period of your life. It also carries the maximum importance for your future predictions. If the Mahadasha lord does not allow a specific event to take place in your reality, then the sub-periods cannot force its manifestation.
What is Antardasha?
Every Mahadasha is divided into 9 sub-periods called Antardasha or Bhukti. The first Antardasha always belongs to the planet that rules the Mahadasha, followed by the rest of the eight planets that follow the sequence. While the Mahadasha shows the broader themes, Antardasha narrows the timing down to months. It is used to analyze events that will play a significant role in your life for a few months at a time.
What is Pratyantar Dasha?
Each Antardasha is further subdivided into 9 Pratyantar dasha. Pratyantar dasha narrows the timing down to weeks or even days. It dictates temporary events in your life that might influence your life for a short period of time.

How is my Vimshottari Dasha calculated?
It’s based on the Moon’s Nakshatra at birth. The system runs on a fixed 120‑year cycle (Ketu - Venus - Sun - Moon - Mars - Rahu - Jupiter - Saturn - Mercury). You start somewhere inside that cycle depending on your birth Nakshatra, so two people born the same day can have different starting Dashas. The tool reads your birth details, finds your remaining balance at birth, and then lays out all Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar Dasha dates for your life.
Which Mahadasha is “good” or “bad”?
There’s no universal good or bad Dasha. Results depend on your chart, for example, how strong the Dasha lord is, which houses it rules from your Lagna and Moon, its dignity (exalted/own/debilitated), aspects, conjunctions, and the running Antardasha. A strong planet can bring growth in its areas; a troubled planet brings lessons first, results later. The Dasha sets the theme; your chart decides how it plays out.
Why didn’t anything big happen when my Dasha changed?
Shifts can be subtle at first. Often, clear events occur with Antardasha switches (sub‑periods) or when major transits (like Saturn/Jupiter) hit the Dasha lord or the houses it activates. Sometimes the change begins internally (mindset, priorities) before it shows up as outer events. Give it a little time and watch the Antardasha dates closely.
