Exaltation

Exaltation is a term in astrology that refers to a position where a planet is at its peak strength and capable of delivering highly beneficial and auspicious results. A planet in exaltation is often described as being "all-powerful" or occupying a “good and strong position.” In such placements, planets are believed to be capable of granting favourable outcomes, particularly during their Dasa (major period) and Antardasa (sub-period).

Exaltation Signs and Deep Exaltation Degrees of Planets

  • Sun: Exalted in Aries, with deep exaltation at the 10th degree of Aries.

  • Moon: Exalted in Taurus, with deep exaltation at the 3rd degree of Taurus.

  • Mars: Exalted in Capricorn, with deep exaltation at the 28th degree of Capricorn.

  • Mercury: Exalted in Virgo, with deep exaltation at the 15th degree of Virgo.

  • Jupiter: Exalted in Cancer, with deep exaltation at the 5th degree of Cancer.

  • Venus: Exalted in Pisces, with deep exaltation at the 27th degree of Pisces.

  • Saturn: Exalted in Libra, with deep exaltation at the 20th degree of Libra.

  • Rahu: Exalted in Gemini, no specific deep exaltation degree.

  • Ketu: Exalted in Scorpio, no specific deep exaltation degree.

The Underlying Concept of Exaltation and Debilitation

The concepts of exaltation and its opposite state, debilitation, are based on the elemental theory. According to traditional texts, the universe is governed by the interplay of two primary elements: fire and water. Each planet is associated with a dominant element, and each zodiac sign also corresponds to an elemental influence. When the element of a planet aligns or enhances the element of the sign it occupies, the planet is exalted.

For example:

  • The Sun, dominated by the fire element, becomes exalted in Aries, the significator sign of Mars, another fire-dominant planet. Here, both the planets are fire-dominated, intensifying the Sun’s natural attributes.

  • The Moon, associated with the water element, becomes exalted in Taurus, ruled by Venus, which is also associated with water element. This alignment supports and amplifies the Moon’s characteristics.

In contrast, debilitation occurs when a planet enters a sign whose elemental nature opposes or weakens its own, similar to how adding water to fire would result. For instance:

  • The Sun becomes debilitated in Libra, the sign of Venus, which carries the opposing water element.

  • The Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, the sign of Mars, where the clash between water and fire leads to a weakening of its qualities.

Relationship Between Exaltation and Debilitation

Debilitation is essentially the opposite of exaltation and is also known as the planet’s “fall.” A planet becomes debilitated in the seventh sign from its exaltation, corresponding to 180 degrees apart in the zodiac. The debilitated state is described in classical texts as a complete weakening of the planet's natural strengths.

It is also stated that the transition of a planet from debilitation to exaltation yields full effects, while a shift from exaltation to debilitation results in diminished outcomes.

Effects of Exalted Planets

Exalted planets are associated with numerous positive outcomes in a native’s life. These include:

  • High Position and Authority: Exalted planets are linked with attainment of powerful roles such as a commander, high government official, or dignitary. Recognition by authority is a noted effect.

  • Wealth and Property: Gains in wealth, land, houses, jewels, and business profits, are frequently attributed to exalted planets.

  • Fame and Reputation: Such placements confer respect, dignity, and lasting fame, especially when combined with yogas involving the 10th house.

  • Happiness and Comforts: Comforts of vehicles, good food, peace of mind, and emotional satisfaction are associated benefits.

  • Education and Intelligence: Success in learning and knowledge, and intellectual pursuits are supported.

  • Health and Vitality: Physical well-being and strength are often outcomes of exaltation.

  • Family Gains: Positive relationships with family members and the birth of children are commonly mentioned.
