Rashi Calculator
Your Rashi is your Moon sign in Vedic astrology. It is determined by which zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the exact moment of your birth. Unlike Western astrology, which focuses on the Sun sign, Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the primary indicator of your personality, emotions, and mental makeup. This is why knowing your Rashi is often the first step in any Vedic astrological reading.
Two people born on the same day can have different Rashis if their birth times are far enough apart. The Moon moves through one sign roughly every 2.25 days, so even a few hours can shift it. This is also why accurate birth time matters when calculating your Rashi.
What is Rashi in Vedic Astrology?
Rashi literally means "heap" or "collection" in Sanskrit, referring to the grouping of stars into zodiac signs. In practice, your Rashi is the sign where the Moon was placed at your birth. It is also called Chandra Rashi or Janma Rashi.
While your Sun sign (the Western zodiac sign most people know) describes your outward identity, your Rashi speaks to your inner world. It governs how you think, react emotionally, process stress, and relate to the people closest to you. In Vedic astrology, the Moon rules the mind (manas), and so your Rashi becomes the lens through which your entire chart is interpreted.
This is why a Vedic astrologer will often ask "What is your Rashi?" before anything else. Your Dasha periods, transit predictions, compatibility analysis, and even daily horoscopes (rashifal) are all calculated from the Moon's position, not the Sun's.
The 12 Rashis
Each Rashi has a ruling planet, an element, and a distinct set of qualities. Here is a brief overview:
Mesh (Aries) is ruled by Mars. People with Mesh Rashi tend to be bold, direct, and action-oriented. They are natural initiators but can be impatient.
Vrishabh (Taurus) is ruled by Venus. Stability, comfort, and loyalty define this Rashi. Vrishabh natives value security and are drawn to beauty and material pleasures.
Mithun (Gemini) is ruled by Mercury. Curious, communicative, and quick-witted. Mithun natives love gathering information and can adapt to almost any social setting.
Kark (Cancer) is ruled by the Moon itself. Deeply emotional, nurturing, and intuitive. Kark natives are protective of family and home, though they can be moody when the Moon is afflicted.
Simha (Leo) is ruled by the Sun. Confident, generous, and drawn to leadership. Simha natives want recognition and have a natural ability to inspire others.
Kanya (Virgo) is ruled by Mercury. Analytical, detail-oriented, and service-minded. Kanya natives excel in areas that require precision and careful thought.
Tula (Libra) is ruled by Venus. Balanced, diplomatic, and aesthetically inclined. Tula natives seek harmony in relationships and are uncomfortable with confrontation.
Vrishchik (Scorpio) is ruled by Mars. Intense, perceptive, and private. Vrishchik natives experience emotions deeply and have a strong instinct for uncovering hidden truths.
Dhanu (Sagittarius) is ruled by Jupiter. Optimistic, philosophical, and freedom-loving. Dhanu natives are drawn to higher learning, travel, and questions of meaning.
Makar (Capricorn) is ruled by Saturn. Disciplined, ambitious, and patient. Makar natives build slowly but aim for lasting achievements.
Kumbh (Aquarius) is ruled by Saturn. Independent, unconventional, and socially aware. Kumbh natives think in systems and care about larger causes beyond personal gain.
Meen (Pisces) is ruled by Jupiter. Compassionate, imaginative, and spiritually inclined. Meen natives are deeply empathetic and often drawn to creative or healing pursuits.
How is Rashi Calculated?
Your Rashi is determined by the Moon's longitude at the time of birth. The zodiac is divided into 12 equal signs of 30 degrees each. Whichever sign the Moon occupies at your birth moment becomes your Rashi.
For example, if the Moon was at 14 degrees in the Taurus segment of the zodiac at your birth time, your Rashi is Vrishabh (Taurus). If the Moon was at 28 degrees in the Scorpio segment, your Rashi is Vrishchik (Scorpio).
This calculation requires three inputs: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth. The place matters because the Moon's position varies slightly depending on the observer's geographic location, and the local time determines which point in the Moon's transit applies to you.
The same calculation also reveals your Nakshatra (birth star), since each Rashi contains 2.25 Nakshatras. Your Nakshatra and its Pada (quarter) add further detail to your personality and life patterns.
Rashi vs Sun Sign
This is one of the most common points of confusion for people new to Vedic astrology. In Western astrology, your "sign" is based on where the Sun was at your birth. In Vedic astrology, the primary sign (Rashi) is based on the Moon.
The differences go deeper:
Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the actual positions of the constellations. Because of a phenomenon called Ayanamsha (the gradual shift between the two systems), your Vedic Rashi is often one sign behind your Western Sun sign.
Your Sun sign stays the same for about 30 days. Your Rashi can change in as little as 2.25 days. This makes Rashi a more specific indicator.
Predictions like rashifal (daily/weekly/monthly horoscopes), Dasha periods, and transit effects are all calculated from Rashi in Vedic astrology.
So if someone asks "What's your sign?" and you answer with your Western Sun sign, that may not match what a Vedic astrologer would use for your chart at all.
Rashi and Nakshatra
Every Rashi contains parts of two or three Nakshatras. Since there are 27 Nakshatras spread across 12 Rashis, each Rashi holds exactly 2.25 Nakshatras.
For instance, Mesh (Aries) contains all four Padas of Ashwini, all four Padas of Bharani, and the first Pada of Krittika. The remaining three Padas of Krittika fall in Vrishabh (Taurus).
Your Nakshatra provides a finer layer of detail beyond your Rashi. While two people may share the same Rashi, their Nakshatras (and Padas within those Nakshatras) can be different, leading to differences in personality, Dasha timing, and compatibility.
This is also why Nakshatra matching (Ashtakoota) is a key part of Kundli matching for marriage. The Rashi tells you the broad emotional profile, and the Nakshatra tells you the specific behavioral tendencies and karmic patterns.
How Rashi Affects Your Life
Your Rashi influences several areas of Vedic astrological analysis:
Rashifal (Horoscope): Daily, weekly, and monthly predictions are based on your Rashi. Planetary transits are read relative to your Moon sign to determine favorable and challenging periods.
Dasha Timing: The Vimshottari Dasha system starts from the Nakshatra within your Rashi. Your entire life's planetary period sequence depends on the Moon's exact position at birth.
Compatibility: In Kundli matching, Rashi is one of the eight factors (Ashtakoota) used to assess compatibility between two people. The Rashi of both partners determines their Bhakoot score, which affects emotional and financial harmony.
Transit Effects (Gochar): When planets move through different signs, their effects are measured from your Rashi. For example, Saturn transiting the 7th from your Rashi (Saptam Shani) has different implications than Saturn transiting the 10th.
Remedies: Many Vedic remedies, such as gemstone recommendations, mantra practice, and fasting days, are prescribed based on the ruling planet of your Rashi.
FAQs
What is the difference between Rashi and zodiac sign?
In Vedic astrology, Rashi refers to your Moon sign, determined by the Moon's position at birth using the Sidereal zodiac. The "zodiac sign" most people know from Western astrology is the Sun sign, calculated using the Tropical zodiac. Because of the Ayanamsha (the ~24 degree gap between the two systems), your Vedic Rashi is often one sign behind your Western sign.
How do I find my Rashi by date of birth?
You need three things: your date of birth, exact time of birth, and place of birth. The calculator uses these to find the Moon's precise position in the zodiac at your birth moment. The sign the Moon was in becomes your Rashi.
Is Rashi the same as Moon sign?
Yes. In Vedic astrology, Rashi and Moon sign refer to the same thing. It is the zodiac sign where the Moon was placed at the time of your birth. It is also called Chandra Rashi or Janma Rashi.
Can my Rashi change?
Your birth Rashi never changes since it is fixed to the Moon's position at your exact time of birth. However, if your recorded birth time is inaccurate, recalculating with the correct time might show a different Rashi. The Moon moves through one sign every ~2.25 days, so even small time corrections can matter.
How does Rashi affect marriage compatibility?
Rashi is one of the eight matching criteria (Ashtakoota) used in Kundli matching. The Rashis of both partners are compared to calculate the Bhakoot score, which assesses emotional and financial compatibility. Certain Rashi combinations are considered naturally harmonious, while others may need additional chart analysis to confirm compatibility.
