What's your first name?

In Vedic astrology, certain auspicious planetary combinations in the birth chart (kundli) can elevate an individual’s social status, leading them to manifest power, prosperity, wealth and recognition. These planetary arrangements are referred to as Raj Yogas. This term has been associated with kings and monarchs since ancient times, but in Vedic astrology, Raj Yogas mean success, leadership, and the ability to be affluent.  However, this must not be confused with the guarantee of an affluent life. Rather, it denotes that the planets are aligned to support you if you take the necessary actions to propel yourself forward.

There are over 100 Raj Yogas in Vedic Astrology; a chosen few are genuinely transformative and important.

Parashari Raj Yoga

Parashari Raj Yogas in Vedic astrology refer to the foundational combinations for wealth, power, success and prosperity as defined by Maharishi Parashar in the classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The principal foundation on which Parashari Raj Yogas are created is based on the relationship between the lords of the Kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses) and the Trikonas (1st, 5th and 9th).

The Kendras: The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses are the Kendras. They represent Lord Vishnu and are known as Vishnusthanas. These houses give you the strength to achieve things  in your material world ( your body, your home, your relationships)

The Trikonas: The 1st, 5th and 9th houses are the Trikonas. They represent Goddess Lakshmi and are known as Lakshmisthanas. These houses represent your past-life, luck and intelligence.

How is Parashari Raj Yoga Formed?

When a Lord of a Kendra and a lord of a Trikona connect, it symbolises the union between Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, causing a flow of wealth, luck and prosperity. This  association can be formed in three ways:

  • Conjunction - The two lords occupy the same house.

  • Mutual Aspect - The two lords cast a full glance or aspect on each other.

  • Exchange of Signs - They occupy each other’s signs (for example, the 9th lord sits in the 10th house, or the 10th lord sits in the 9th house).

Based on how these planetary lords interact and the planets concerned, there are different formations of Parashari Raj Yogas.

Dharma Karmadhipati Yoga

If there is a yoga that could be considered the most auspicious yoga in an individual’s life, where he benefits in worldly and spiritual matters, it is the Dharma Karmadhipati Yoga. It is the highest and most powerful form of Parashari Raj Yoga. A person with a strong Dharma Karmadhipati Yoga experiences ease while coursing through life. They are at the right place at the right time. They receive public recognition and influence among the masses. They do not just lead, they become an idol figure that people are inspired by.

How is Dharma Karmadhipati Yoga formed?

This Yoga is formed by an association (conjunction, aspect, exchange) between the Lord of the 9th house and the Lord of the 10th house. This is exceptionally powerful because of the essence the houses carry:

9th House: The 9th house is the highest Trikona. It represents your past-life credit, your luck, your ethics and the blessings of your father or Guru.

10th House: This is the highest Kendra. It represents your status, rank in society, and your capacity to accomplish things.

Maha Raja Yoga

Maha Raja Yogas are supreme astrological combinations that generate immense power, prosperity and the highest level of political or royal status, propelling an individual to the status of an emperor who is loved by his associates. Maha Raja Yogas are reliant on karakas (significators) and the most auspicious houses.

How is Maha Raj Yoga formed?

To form this auspicious yoga, these two planets must be positioned in one of the following ways:

  • In the Ascendant (1st house) or the 5th house.

  • In their exaltation sign, own signs or own Navamsa

  • The placement must also receive an aspect from a benefic planet to manifest.

Yogakaraka

If one single planet happens to own both a Kendra and Trikona simultaneously, it accomplishes the auspicious status of a Yogakaraka. Since it carries the energy of both a quadrant and a trine, it has the ability to act as an Independent Raj Yoga and bestow immense wealth, success and status on its own.

The Panch-Mahapurush Yogas: The Most Powerful Raj Yogas

As described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the Panch-Mahapurush Yogas are the most transformative Parashari Raj Yogas in Vedic Astrology for a person. They are formed when one of the non-luminary planets - Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is positioned in a Kendra and is occupying its own sign at the same time or its sign of exaltation.

The five yogas, along with their specific effects, are as follows:

Ruchaka Yoga:

This yoga is formed when Mars occupies Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn in a quadrant. An individual with this yoga is courageous, possesses great leadership qualities, is highly victorious and can be considered equal to a king.

Bhadra Yoga

This yoga is formed when Mercury occupies Gemini or Virgo in a quadrant. This yoga manifests a highly developed intellect, eloquent speech, benevolent nature and a long life in a person.

Hamsa Yoga

This yoga is formed when Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer in a quadrant. An individual with this yoga possesses a righteous temperament, a pure mind, devotion to virtues, and would command respect among his people.

Malavya Yoga

This yoga arises when Venus occupies Taurus, Libra or Pisces in a quadrant.  Individuals are blessed with an attractive appearance, abundant wealth, and a life rich in luxury. They are admirable, learned, enjoy a loving spouse and children.

SashaYoga

This yoga is formed by Saturn in Capricorn, Aquarius, and Libra in a quadrant. It produces a commanding personality that is unbeatable, often seen in powerful generals,  ministers and leaders. When afflicted, it could create obsessive ambition and ruthless desires.

When formed perfectly, these yogas enhance the life of a person greatly. Possessing one yoga makes one highly fortunate, possessing two makes one equal to a king, possessing three makes one a king, possessing four makes one a ruler and possessing all of them propels one to be superior to an emperor. However, the significance of the yoga is dulled or nullified if the yoga-producing planet is associated with or aspected by the luminaries (the Sun or the Moon) or the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu)

Dhana Yoga

When we talk about Raj Yogas, it is also important to talk about Dhana Yoga. Although they define different metrics for success, they can go hand in hand. While the Raj Yoga can take you to an elevated position of a leader, or head, the Dhana Yoga makes sure you have the financial resources to support you. When a planet rules both the Raj Yoga house (for example, 10th) and the Dhana yoga house (for example, 11th) then we observe someone whose power and influence directly amass massive wealth.

How is Dhana Yoga formed?

Dhana Yoga is formed by a relationship between the four primary houses of money. When the Lords of the 2nd or 11th houses form a connection (conjunction, aspect, or exchange) with the Lords of 5th or 9th houses, Dhana Yoga is created.

  • 2nd house - Focuses on accumulated wealth, bank balance, money, family assets and precious metals

  • 11th house - Focuses on profits, sudden income and fulfilment of desires.

  • 5th house - Focuses on intellect and supposition

  • 9th house - Focuses on the fortune and “luck” to sustain the wealth

Vipreet Raj Yoga

“Vipareet” suggests a contrast. Unlike other yogas that take birth through auspicious houses, Vipareet Raj Yoga is born from the dusthana houses - 6th, 8th and 12th. These houses typically signify hardships or turmoil, but in this yoga, after interacting with the lords, their effects are reversed completely. After an initial period of hardship, one is blessed with immense wealth and power and gains victory over one's enemies.

How is Vipreet Raj Yoga formed?

Vipareet Raj Yoga arises when the lords of evil houses associate exclusively with one another, or occupy another inauspicious house. This can be done in 4 primary ways:

  • The lord of the 8th house is placed in the 6th or 12th house

  • The lord of the 6th house is placed in the 8th or 12th house

  • The lord of the 12th house is placed in the 6th or 8th house

  • The lords of the 6th, 8th, and 12th interchange houses sit together or face each other mutually.

Neechabhanga Raj Yoga

Neechabhanga Raj Yoga in Vedic astrology refers to the cancellation of a planet’s debilitation. Usually, when a planet is debilitated, it loses its power to bring about favourable circumstances. However, under specific planetary arrangements, this debilitation is cancelled, bringing in unexpected prosperity and success. This yoga is prevalent in individuals who rise from lowly status or ordinary circumstances to attain extreme prosperity and social ranking.

How is Neechabhanga Yoga formed?

For Neechabhanga Raj Yoga to be formed into a Raj Yoga, several structural rules in the birth chart enable this cancellation:

  • Placement of the Quadrant: The lord of the sign occupied by the debilitated planet, or the planet that would be exalted in the same sign, is placed in a Kendra (quadrant) from either the lagna (Ascendant) or the Moon.

  • Direct Aspect: The debilitated sign receives an aspect from the lord of its own sign or is occupied by the lord.

  • Mutual Exchange: The debilitated planets and its sign lord exchange signs.

Other Notable Yogas:

Gaja-Kesari Yoga - Formed when Jupiter is in a Kendra (1, 4, 7 or 10) from the Moon. It grants fame, a high intellect, victory over enemies and a noble character in an individual.

Chandra-Mangala Yoga - Formed by a conjunction or mutual aspect between the Moon and Mars. It provides immense financial power, success and the ability to amass properties or land.

Adhi Yoga - Formed when natural benefits are in the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from the Moon. It grants high-ranking administrative power, a life of luxury and comfort and a commanding presence.
Buddha-Aditya Yoga - Formed by a conjunction of the Sun and Mercury (given that Mercury is not too combust). It grants sharp intellect, superior administrative skills and a noteworthy public reputation.

Amala Yoga - Formed when a natural benefic is placed in the 10th house from the Moon Lagna. It manifests professional success through ethical means, a good rapport among people and a life of respect.

Srinath Yoga - The 9th Lord is exalted in the 10th house, while the 10th Lord is with the 9th Lord. It grants extreme prosperity, a highly influential career and religious merit.
Pushkala Yoga - Formed when the Moon’s sign lord is in a Kendra with the Ascendant lord, while a planet aspects to the Ascendant. It manifests wealth, fame, high social status and eloquent speech in a person.

What are the benefits of Parashari Raj Yoga?

Parashari Raj Yoga elevates a person to possessing great social status, power and influence. It provides the foundation for an individual to reach success. As it is formed by the association of the quadrant (kendras) and the trines (trikonas), it represents the combined divine blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. This combination grants an individual a respected and “kingly” status along with comfort and luxury.

I have Raj yoga, why don’t I see any results?

Raj Yogas typically manifest only during their favourable planetary periods. Moreover, just the presence of the yoga does not equate to seeing effects, as it also has to do with the vitality of the positioned planets, their degrees and if they have any afflictions.

Can Raj Yoga be cancelled?

Yes, a Raj Yoga can be cancelled or neutralised, a condition known as Rajbhanga Yoga. This cancellation happens under adverse circumstances, such as if planets are severely weakened by combustion or placed in debilitated signs without cancellation. It can also be cancelled or neutralised if the planets responsible for the yogas are associated with the lords of the 6th, 8th or 12th houses, which produce obstacles in the path of success. Ultimately, if the Lagna Lord is weak, the individual might lack the capacity to actually manifest the effects of a Raj Yoga.
