Raj Yoga in Vedic Astrology #
In Vedic astrology, Raj Yogas or royal combinations refer to an expanse of auspicious planetary combinations bringing prosperity, well-being and the most excellent status to natives. These yogas are usually a result of potent conjunctions between the Kendra (1st , 4th , 7th and 10th ) and Trikona (1st, 5th and 9th ) houses. A yoga follows nature’s law: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The ‘coming together of planets’ in specific alignments ends up affecting a native much more strongly than ‘individual planets’ do.
There are over a hundred raj yogas in Vedic Astrology, of which about twenty-five are of the excellent types. Of these, we have picked the eight most prominent ones. Here’s everything you need to know about them:
Gaja Kesari Yoga - The united valour of two kings #
Gaja Kesari refers combinedly to elephant and lion, both depicting solemnity and royalty. Gaja Kesari Yoga is one of the most celebrated yogas in Vedic astrology.
The yoga is formed when Jupiter is in Kendra house (1st , 4th , 7th or 10th ) from the Moon, provided Jupiter isn’t retrograde, combust or debilitated. Further it shouldn’t be placed in the 6th house, neither should it be aspected by a malefic. Gaja Kesari Yoga is effective only during the dasha period (mahadasha or antardasha) of these planets (Jupiter or Moon).
Effect: The ones with this yoga are prosperous, virtuous and illustrious. They have leadership qualities and are likely to achieve lasting fame and recognition in their respective fields. Such natives gain riches and lead a peaceful, harmonious life.
Buddhaditya Yoga - The gift of wit and wisdom #
Buddhaditya yoga is a potent planetary conjunction that brings intelligence and authority to one’s life.
It arises when Mercury and Sun are placed in the same house in the birth chart, provided they aren’t placed in 6th , 8th or 12th house. They should also not be placed in their respective debilitated signs: libra (for sun) and pisces (for mercury). The yoga is effective only when the two planets are above 3° and below 12° from each other.
Effect: This yoga bestows upon the native enhanced intelligence, clear communication, business acumen, analytical prowess, sharp memory, vitality, creativity and a sense of authority.
Vipreet Raj Yoga - Turning struggle into success #
Vipreet means contrary. This yog is called so because it arises not from auspicious houses, but from dusthana houses – 6th, 8th and 12th. Usually the lords or planets posited in these positions lead to unfavourable results, but this yog leads to a complete reversal of their negative effects
The yog occurs when 6th, 8th or 12th lord is placed in one of the other dusthana house or in its own dusthana house. In the former case (6th/8th/12th lord sitting in one of the other dusthana houses), three yogas arise:
Harsha Yoga: 6th lord sitting in 8th/12th house
Sarala Yoga: 8th lord sitting in 6th/12th house
Vimala Yoga: 12th lord sitting in 6th/8th house
Effect: Like a phoenix rising from its own ashes, the natives with this yog rise above the din, turning adversities into opportunities. Their struggles go on to becoming success stories that change the world.
Dharma Karmadhipati Yog - The aligning of purpose and action #
This is a raj yog of the highest order. This yog is based on the relationship between the lords of house of dharma (9th) and house of karma (10th), and hence called as Dharma Karmadhipati Yog.
This yog arises when lords of 9th and 10th house are in conjunction or mutual aspect.
This yog also occurs when 10th lord and 9th lord are involved in exchange of signs or nakshatras. The thing to note here is that 9th house is the strongest Trikona and 10th house, the strongest Kendra. Their combination makes it one of the most powerful yogas in Vedic astrology.
Effect: Unlike most people, the natives with this yog make sure their actions (karma) are always aligned with the purpose (dharma). They follow their true passion and know for certain where they are headed in life. These natives carry out their responsibilities in a dharmic manner, always acting with integrity. They long for scriptural knowledge and their life is a pursuit of spiritual growth.
Akhand Yog - The unbroken sovereignty #
A star in the sky of raj yogas, Akhand Samrajya yog is the fruition of your past life karmas.
This yoga occurs when Jupiter rules either the 5th or the 11th house (happens only for natives with Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius or Taurus as their ascendant).
It also occurs when the lords of the 2nd, 9th and 11th house occupy the Kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Moon.
Effect: Natives with this raj yog enjoy a high social standing and are likely to hold political positions. They are ethical leaders and their charisma gains them devoted followers. The effects of Akhand Samrajya Yog are long-lasting, ensuring uninterrupted fortune.
Neecha Bhanga Raj Yog - The rise through adversity #
Neech bhanga means debilitation getting cancelled. The yog neutralizes the negative effect of a debilitated planet and amp up its strength. The debility is cancelled in a couple of ways (as listed below). When it’s cancelled in more than two ways, the benefic effects amplify.
The lord of the sign occupied by the debilitated planet is in a Kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) from the Ascendant or Moon.
The lord of the sign where the debilitated planet gets exalted is in a Kendra house from the Ascendant or Moon.
The debilitated planet sits in conjunction with the lord of that sign.
The lord of the planet’s exaltation sign is in a Trikona house (1st , 5th and 9th ).
A debilitated planet is aspected by another debilitated planet. In such a case, both planets lose their debility.
The dispositor of the debilitated planet is in a Kendra house from the Ascendant or Moon.
The dispositor and the debilitated planet are in conjunct or in mutual exchange.
The debilitated planet is exalted in Navamsa (D9) chart.
Effect: The natives with this yog attain growth through trials and tribulations. Once this yog activates (usually in later life), it brings success to the native in every endeavour and bestows him with fame, fortune and a fulfilling life.
Vasi Yog and Veshi Yog - Blessed by the almighty Sun #
Vasi and Veshi Yogas are distinct, but both are auspicious, arising in one’s chart when planets excluding Rahu, Ketu and Moon, associate with Sun. The Sun signifies life’s journey, personal growth and the social status of an individual.
Vasi Yog occurs when a planet occupies 12th house from the Sun.
Veshi Yog occurs when a planet occupies 2nd house from the Sun. In both the cases, Rahu, Ketu and Moon are excluded from the consideration..
Veshi Yog occurs when a planet occupies 2nd house from the Sun. In both the cases, Rahu, Ketu and Moon are excluded from the consideration.
Effect: The result of both these yogas depend upon the specific planet associated with the Sun. Generally speaking, in Vasi Yog, the Sun is right ahead of the planet, bringing optimism and harmony to all enterprises of life, be it personal or professional; and in Veshi Yog, the Sun is right behind the planet, providing insights and inspiration towards the fulfilment of desired goa
