What's your first name?

Have you ever met someone who shares your exact birthday, yet they couldn't be more different from you? It almost feels like one of you is glitching, or maybe either is pretending to be somebody else.

The truth is, nobody is doing it wrong. You just have different guiding systems, in this case, different Rising Signs.

While one of you might be a Pisces Rising, coursing life through a mystical and effortless manner, your birthday twin could be a Sagittarius Rising, functioning with a bold and energetic demeanor.

Did you know that your Rising Sign is actually responsible for nearly 80% of your life’s journey? We’ve been taught that the Sun Sign is the "King" of our horoscope, the essence of our personality. But in the ancient Vedic tradition, that’s only half the truth.. Think of your Sun Sign as your central identity, but your Rising Sign (the Lagna) as the blueprint that actually builds your life.

What is a Rising Sign?

The Rising Sign also called the Ascendant is the zodiac constellation that appears to rise on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. If your Sun Sign is the map of your ‘soul’, the Rising Sign is the persona that you project to the world. It is your social filter and it dictates your interactions with society, how the world perceives your energy, your physical appearance and style.

In the Vedic tradition, the Rising Sign is called the Lagna. It is the absolute foundation of your horoscope. Think of it as your astrological ‘base’. The Lagna necessarily governs the mental, physical, spiritual and general appearance of an individual. It translates to “dawn” or the exact point of contact where your soul stepped into the material world to begin its human journey. It is the ‘cradle’ of your existence; the original blueprint that determines how the course of your life will unfold.

The Lagna dictates your entire physical boundaries. It governs your internal systems from digestion to immunity. It is a prerequisite to how much of life you can ‘physically’ withstand. A strong Lagna is what differentiates between an efficient and a delicate system.

Discovering Your Guardian Angel: (The Ascendant Lord)

Finding your Rising Sign is only the beginning of your journey. The magic unfolds when you locate the planet that rules over your Rising Sign. The Ascendant Lord known as Lagnesh in Sanskrit is the planet that is best understood as your ‘Guardian Angel’ or the ‘ruler’ of your horoscope. This is the most significant celestial body in your entire birth chart.

The Vedic perspective elevates the Ascendant Lord to a spiritually elevated position. It represents your health, your personality, and your life path. It is the driving force behind all your actions and a protective barrier against the perils of life. Consider the Ascendant Lord to be the CEO. If the CEO is thriving, every other sector in his life is affluent.

In Western and Vedic astrology, planets like Saturn and Mars are feared to bring a negative impact in one’s life. However, the Lagna has a superpower that can override this probability. If a malefic planet happens to be the Ascendant Lord, it immediately drops its malefic nature and becomes miraculously good for you.

Every Zodiac is ‘ruled’ by a specific planet. This ruler is the Ascendant Lord. It shapes your demeanor, overall health, and the area of your life that has your maximum attention. For reference:

If Your Rising Sign is...Your Ascendant Lord is...
Aries or ScorpioMars

Gemini or VirgoMercury

Since the Rising Sign is placed in the eastern direction, the place of “dawn” or the point of contact, a special directional power is associated with it. In Vedic tradition, planets acquire special power in accordance with the direction they are placed. This is called Digbala (directional strength). For example, Jupiter and Mercury, representing wisdom and intellect, respectively, are extremely powerful when placed in the East. If either of these planets sits in your Rising Sign, you can be assured of being blessed with intelligence and spiritual guidance.

Western vs Vedic: Why Your Sign Changes?

If you have only referred to Western astrology to gain an insight into your Rising sign, you might be looking at the wrong sign altogether. You will be surprised to find that your Vedic Rising Sign has moved backwards one entire zodiac sign. This is because Western Astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Moreover, Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) uses the Sidereal Zodiac, which aligns with the actual constellations in the sky.

Due to an astronomical phenomenon called the Precession of the Equinoxes, the Earth slowly wobbles on its axis as it spins. This occurs due to the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon upon our planet. Due to this, there is roughly a mathematical difference (Ayanamsha) of 23 to 24 degrees between the two systems that also shifts back your Rising Sign by about the same degree.

How to Find Your Rising Sign (Ascendant)?

1. Locate the First House

Take a look at your Vedic Chart ( Kundli). First, look at the extreme top-centre of your chart, which is a large diamond shape. This is your First House, also known as your Lagna. Regardless of the numbers or planets situated inside, this particular space on the chart always represents you. This extends to your physical body, your vitality, and your course of life.

2. Decode the Number

Inside that top-centre diamond, you will see a number ranging from 1 to 12. In Vedic Astrology, the number in the box is not the house number; it is the number of the Zodiac. The number signifies the constellation that was rising at the time of your birth.

3. Match The Number to Your Sign

Find the number in your First House and match it to the list below to discover your true Vedic Rising Sign:

The 12 Houses: The Map of Your Life’s Journey

The house where your Ascendant Lord resides determines where your ‘soul’ is most engaged, with respect to time and effort. In Vedic astrology, the Rising Sign permanently rules over the 1st House, and the remaining zodiacs follow in a circle, dividing your life into 12 distinct arenas of experience.

The Lagna is the first house that sets the foundation for the rest of the 11 houses. The Lagna can be considered to be an “anchor”. It delegates the houses into different arenas of your life, from wealth to career to relationships.

The Three Pillars: The Sun, The Moon and The Rising

In Vedic philosophy, human existence is multi-faceted or multi-dimensional. There cannot exist a single description or analysis of an individual based on one planet. According to the ancient seers. The Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant (Rising Sign) are the three pillars governing the entire makeup of an individual. Together, they camouflage to represent one’s true self.

The Sun:

The Sun in Vedic philosophy represents the soul (Atman), the essence of one’s being. It should not be confused entirely with the ‘ego’ as it is an integration of a lot of different experiences that constitute one’s outward personality. The Sun can be considered the ultimate life force that leads an individual’s goals and desires.

The Moon:

The Moon represents the mind (Manas), our internal state and Prana (breath of life). The Moon functions as the bridge between the Sun and the Rising Sign. The Moon is responsible for your emotional responses, reactions, moods, passions and the human consciousness. It is a processor of the joys and sorrows of life.  The Moon dictates how we experience life daily and how we react to it.

The Ascendant (Rising Sign)

The Rising Sign represents the body (Deha). It signifies the physical body, health and general appearance. The Ascendant is representative of the outer, immediate environment, the physical life we participate in right now, along with the actions that we indulge in.

An uninterrupted consciousness or an integrated self is possible through a harmonious blending of the life forces signified by The Sun, The Moon, The Rising Sign (Ascendant) and The Ascendant Lord.

What is the difference between the Sun, Moon and Rising sign?

The Sun sign represents your soul (Atma). It is representative of the deep-seated persona that governs your life. It rules your willpower, your sense of “I am”, your ego. The Moon sign represents the mind (Manasa). In the Vedic tradition, the moon is more significant than the Sun as it dictates how you experience your reality. It governs your emotions, memory, and your capacity to experience happiness and sadness. The Rising sign (Lagna) is the zodiac sign ascending on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. It is the most significant as it defines the 1st house. It governs the physical body, energy and the path of your life (Dharma).

Is the Rising sign more important than the Sun sign?

In Vedic tradition, yes. The rising sign(Lagna) signifies your physical body and destiny. It is the 1st house of your chart, it sets the foundation for your career, marriage and health. A rising sign tells you the “how’ of things. It can answer important questions about your personality, and it can also help you understand yourself in depth rather than on a surface level.

What is the purpose of the “Lagna Lord” ?

The Lagna Lord or the Ascendant Lord is the planet that rules your Rising sign. In Vedic philosophy, this is the most important planet in your chart. According to its position, you can determine in which sector of your life your energy is most concentrated. If your Lagna Lord is strong, it means that you will be affluent in health and success regardless of other complicated placements.

Why is my Vedic Rising different from my Western Rising?

Your Rising sign for Vedic and Western systems might differ because both use different systems to measure the sky. Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac, which tracks the real-time position of the stars in the sky. On the other hand, Western astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac, which refers to the seasons as they were about 2000 years ago.

Does the Rising Sign keep changing?

The Rising Sign changes roughly every two hours. Given that it moves too quickly, it is the most personal part of your chart. Therefore, people with the same birthdays can have the same Sun Sign but will have entirely different Rising Signs, hence altering their respective life paths.
