Have you ever wondered how people perceive you and your life? What is the image or reputation you hold in their minds? Well, there is your inner self, and then there is a self that exists in the world independent of who you truly are. This is the self that the world responds to and reacts to. In Jaimini astrology, this is referred to as Arudha.

What is Arudha Pada?

In your kundli, every house has a lord; when that lord moves away from its own house, it produces a reflection of that house in the material world. This reflection is called Arudha Pada. It is an umbrella term to represent the reflections of any of the twelve astrological houses. The word Arudha comes from Sanskrit, which means “mounted” or “seated on”, and it signifies the illusion (maya) produced by the reflection of a sign about its lord.

The houses represent different areas of your life, it is a signifier of your physical reality. The Arudha portrays the illusions of the world in relation to those specific matters. It reveals how other people perceive you in regard to that specific area of your life. Regardless of what you think of yourself, what people think about you and your life can be quite contrary. You may be extremely wealthy and affluent, but might appear modest to other people. On the flip side, you might be perceived as someone with power and influence, but might be internally struggling.

How To Find Arudha Pada

To find Arudha Pada, you have to follow a few simple steps:

  1. Identify a house to determine which house’s Arudha Pada you want to find. Then we take a look at the sign occupying that house and find its ruling planet (lord). For example, if your Ascendant is Aries, then your Lord is Mars.

  2. Count the number of signs from the starting house or sign to the sign occupied by its Lord. If Aries is your 1st house and Mars is in Leo, then count from Aries to Leo. Aries(1), Taurus (2), Gemini (3), Cancer (4), Leo (5). The distance is 5.

  3. Then, count the exact number of signs forward from the Lord. The sign that you arrive at is the Arudha of that particular house. Leo (1), Virgo (2), Libra (3), Scorpio (4), Sagittarius (5). Sagittarius is the Arudha Lagna.

Exceptions

An Arudha cannot fall in the 1st or the 7th house from its original sign. The 1st and the 7th houses from any sign represent Satya or the ultimate truth. As Arudha represents Maya or illusion, it is entirely disconnected from the truth. An illusion cannot coexist with the truth; an Arudha can never fall in the 1st or the 7th house from its beginning point.

  • If the Arudha falls in the 1st house from the original sign, the 10th house is taken into consideration.

  • If the Arudha falls in the 7th house from the original sign, then the 4th house is taken into consideration.

Arudha Lagna: Your Public Image and Persona

Of all the Arudha Padas in your chart, the Arudha of the 1st house, called the Arudha Lagna, is the most significant.

While your natal Lagna (Ascendant) describes who you are, your physical body, your temperament and ideals, the Arudha Lagna describes how the world perceives you. It is the prime reflection of your standing in society, determining your public image and reputation. It shows the Maya or illusion instead of who they actually are. The house that your Arudha Lagna falls in determines the area of your life that will be closely linked to your public identity.

If you have an exalted planet in your Lagna, but if the lord of your Arudha Lagna is debilitated, then the world will perceive you differently, regardless of your true nature. If you are someone with strong personal ideals, but if the lord of your Arudha Lagna is debilitated, society will perceive you as someone with a low status. The Arudha Lagna is the primary point of interaction between your mind and the world.

Planetary Influence On Arudha Padas

The impact of planets on an Arudha Pada, whether through exaltation, debilitation or aspects, dictates how the perceived image of that house will manifest in the real world

Benefic Planets

When Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or Full Moon occupy an Arudha, the world sees that area as prosperous and easygoing.

  • Jupiter: Jupiter always gives an outstanding reputation in society, in matters of money and spirituality. The world views you as wise and of high intellect.

  • Venus: Venus is the natural significator of luxury and beauty. When it interacts with the Darapada (A7), it naturally projects an image of attractiveness and luxury to the world.

  • Mercury: Mercury rules speech, communication, business ventures and intelligence. A Mercury-influenced Arudha makes the world perceive you as an efficient communicator and a skilled businessman.

Malefic Planets

When Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu occupy an Arudha, the public image becomes more serious, spiritual or controversial

  • Saturn: Saturn rules labour, older, conventional things. If Saturn influences AL, it projects an orthodox or serious image into the outside world. Even if one is wealthy, Saturn might make one appear to be struggling or rigid.

  • Mars: Mars creates an image of a “fighter”; it can incite aggression and competition. If placed in A6, the world will perceive your enemies as unbeatable and aggressive, as it is a representation of the image of your enemies and opposition.

  • Rahu: Rahu rules illusion and mystery. Rahu placed in AL presents an image of an eccentric individual who has more to hide than to show. One might be perceived as an outsider not bound by traditional ideals.

  • Ketu: Ketu is the Moksha Karaka (significator of spiritual emancipation). If Ketu is placed in the A10, it will create an image that doesn’t adhere to the corporate outlook. People might view your work as highly spiritual and technical

Strengthening the Arudha Padas

The remedies for Arudha Padas mainly revolve around strengthening the ideal, positive image and addressing the blockages associated with them. The Arudha is an illusion born from the mind and the illusory perceptions of the world. Therefore, strengthening them is enabled through the Moon (the mind) and Jupiter (divine grace). This can be done through worshipping Shiva on Mondays or Vishnu on Thursdays.

  • Appease the Lord of the Arudha: The Lord is the most crucial planet for any Arudha Pada as it acts as the enabler or controller of a particular image. Satisfying the lord of the particular Arudha will ensure the removal of obstacles from that area of your life.

  • Remedies for the Upapada: Fasting on the weekday that is ruled by the Upapada lord is one of the most effective ways of tackling any difficulties in marriage. For a long, prosperous married life, the lord of the 2nd house from the Upapada must be appeased.

  • Remedies for 12th House: Planets placed in the 12th house from your AL indicate hidden enemies and weaknesses. If there is a malefic planet in the 12th house from AL, make charitable donations in relation to that particular planet.

  • 7th House from AL: The 7th house from the AL acts as a true obstruction (Badhaka). It represents those who reject or oppose your image in the outside world. It is a “doorway” you have to come through. If a single malefic planet occupies the 7th house from the AL, it becomes a strong obstruction that can cause frustration and requires targeted remedies.

What is the difference between the Lagna and Arudha Lagna?

Your Lagna (Ascendant) describes who you are, your temperament, your physical body and your core nature. On the other hand, the Arudha Lagna describes how the world perceives you, regardless of how you perceive yourself.

What is the most important Arudha Pada?

Arudha Lagna is the most important Pada of all the twelve Padas. It rules your overall public image and social standing. Through the AL, all the different areas of your life are also determined. Apart from AL, A7 and A10 are the other important Padas that carry utmost importance for relationships and career respectively.

What is Upapada Lagna?

Upapada Lagna is the Arudha Pada of the 12th house. It is the primary significator of marriage, revealing the nature of the spouse, longevity of your marriage and other factors. It is read alongside Darakaraka for a thorough understanding of marriage in the chart.

Can Arudha Pada change over time?

While the physical calculation and the placement of the Arudha Pada remains fixed, the perception and the physical manifestation of that image can change over time. Since Arudha represents illusion (Maya), it is subject to the changing opinions of society as you course through your life.
