Have you ever wondered how much money could you possibly make in your lifetime? Or if you will be able to live a life of luxury and comfort for the years to come? We all are curious about our financial status, especially if our wealth will sustain us in the near future. There is a special ascendant in Vedic astrology that can answer this question for, and it is called the Indu Lagna.

What is Indu Lagna

Indu Lagna, also called the ‘Wealth Ascendant’ is one of the ‘special ascendants’ in Vedic astrology, particularly in the Ashtakavarga system. The Indu Lagna is a specialized reference point that is used to determine the magnitude of wealth that can come into a person's life, along with his financial status and prosperity. While your Ascendant (Lagna) represents your physical body and your true self, and your Rashi (Moon Sign) represents your state of mind and different moods, The Indu Lagna is used to exclusively determine a person’s financial status. It belongs to a broader category of special ascendants that are used to specifically analyse different areas of material life, alongside Shri Lagna and Hora Lagna and Ghatika Lagna.

By evaluating the planets that are sitting in or aspecting this lagna, astrologers can determine the exact amount of wealth and prosperity a person can accumulate within this lifetime. They can assess your talents, life path or your line of work to determine how wealth will flow into your life. Through the Indu Lagna, you can also have an idea about the sectors or industries that will most likely be favourable for you in terms of financial growth.

Beyond predicting financial status, Indu Lagna also determines how wealth influences and impacts an individual’s physical and emotional status. Whether he is likely to become a spendthrift or thrifty in his day to day life. It also reveals a likelihood of living a lavish lifestyle or a modest one, depending on how the wealth ascendant interacts with other planetary positions and aspects in the chart.

How to Calculate Indu Lagna

Indu Lagna is calculated using the 9th house, the house of fortune and specific numerical values, known as kalas or planetary rays, assigned to the seven planets.

Planetary Rays

Steps to Calculate Indu Lagna

  1. Identify the ruler of the 9th house from the Ascendant (Lagna).

  2. Identify the ruler of the 9th house from the Moon sign.

  3. Find the ray values assigned to these two planets and add them together.

  4. Divide the total by 12 and note the remainder. If the sum is 12 or less, keep the sum itself as the final number. If the sum is greater than 12, divide by 12 and use the remainder (e.g., a sum of 22 divided by 12 leaves a remainder of 10). If the remainder is 0, treat it as 12.

  5. Starting from the Moon sign, count forward by the number of signs indicated by the remainder. The sign you arrive at is your Indu Lagna.

For Example: If you have your ascendant in Leo and your Moon sign in Taurus, the 9th house from your ascendant is Aries. Aries is ruled by Mars, which contributes 6 rays. The 9th house from your Moon sign is Capricorn, which is ruled by Saturn and adds 1 ray

Adding these values together gives you a total sum of  7. Because this number is less than 12, you do not need to divide it. Finally, you count 7 houses forward starting directly from your Moon sign. Counting Taurus as the 1st house and moving forward brings you to Scorpio, making Scorpio your Indu Lagna.

How to Read Indu Lagna

To evaluate the Indu Lagna, we need to assess the Ruling Lord of that sign, as well as any planets occupying or aspecting it, to determine the wealth promised by the Indu Lagna.

Ruling Lord

The lord of the Indu Lagna acts as a primary significator of wealth for the individual. The financial prosperity promised by the Indu Lagna will typically manifest during the specific planetary periods (Dashas) and sub-periods (Bhuktis) of this ruling lord. If the lord is well placed (exalted or in its own sign) and free from malefic influences, it can bring immense riches during its period. Conversely, if the lord is weakly placed, the wealth will be limited but might grow over time.

Benefic Planets

When multiple benefic planets occupy the Indu Lagna, the native is likely to amass exceptional wealth and enjoy lasting financial well-being. Even a single benefic planet placed in the Indu Lagna can point towards a significant amount of wealth, that is, it remains free from the influence of other benefic or malefic aspects.

Malefic Planets

If the Indu Lagna is occupied by malefic planets, such as the Sun, Saturn, or Mars, the individual generally experiences only moderate financial gains. A malefic planet in the Indu Lagna that is placed in its sign of exaltation produces delayed wealth. Wealth may be limited in the beginning but it can grow with time.

Mixed Influences

When both benefic and malefic planets influence the Indu Lagna, the native is still capable of attaining significant wealth, although financial growth may come through a combination of opportunities and challenges.

Planetary Aspects and House Placements

In addition, the Indu Lagna can be treated as a temporary ascendant to identify periods of wealth accumulation and financial strain. Planets that occupy, aspect in the Indu Lagna or reside in the Kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses) from the Indu Lagna or reside in the Trikonas (1st, 5th, and 9th houses) from the Indu Lagna are considered wealth-producing. Their major and sub-periods (Dashas and Bhuktis) are often associated with financial gains, prosperity, and material success.

Challenges to Wealth : Planets placed in the 3rd, 6th, 8th, or 12th houses from the Indu Lagna tend to weaken financial stability. During their Dashas and Bhuktis, they may bring a surge in expenses, debts, losses, or other obstacles related to wealth.

What is Indu Lagna?

Indu Lagna is a wealth-indicator point in Vedic astrology, calculated from the Ascendant, the Moon sign and the 9th house lord. Unlike the Lagna or Moon sign, Indu Lagna is used specifically to determine a person's financial potential and capacity to accumulate wealth.

How do you calculate Indu Lagna?

To calculate the Indu Lagna, find the 9th lord from your Ascendant and the 9th lord from your Moon sign, then add their planetary ray values together (Sun=30, Moon=16, Mars=6, Mercury=8, Jupiter=10, Venus=12, Saturn=1). If the total sum is greater than 12, divide it by 12 and keep the remainder; if it is 12 or less, keep the sum as it is. Finally, count that remaining number of houses forward starting from your Moon sign (treating the Moon sign as house 1), The house where you land is your Indu Lagna.

What does Indu Lagna indicate in a birth chart?

Indu Lagna indicates overall wealth potential in a birth chart. It is separate from the 2nd house (savings) and 11th house (income). A strong Indu Lagna suggests greater capacity for financial growth and material prosperity across life.

How do you read Indu Lagna in a chart?

To read Indu Lagna, treat it like a Lagna for wealth: examine which planets occupy or aspect the Indu Lagna sign, note its ruling lord's placement and strength, and check for benefic or malefic influence to assess overall financial prosperity.
