What Is Arudha Lagna?
In Vedic astrology, every house has what's called an Arudha, essentially, its reflection. A house represents the underlying reality of an area of life, while its Arudha shows how that reality actually shows up in the world, the version other people see and respond to.
The Arudha Lagna is the Arudha of the 1st house. It is the "image", the reputation, persona, or impression that forms around you, often without you consciously creating it. While your natal Lagna (Ascendant) describes who you are, your physical body, your temperament and ideals, the Arudha Lagna describes how the world perceives you. It is the prime reflection of your social standing, determining your public image and reputation. It shows the Maya or illusion instead of who they actually are. The house that your Arudha Lagna falls in determines the area of your life that will be closely linked to your public identity.
If you have an exalted planet in your Lagna, but if the lord of your Arudha Lagna is debilitated, then the world will perceive you differently regardless of your true nature. If you are someone with strong personal ideals, but if the lord of your Arudha Lagna is debilitated, society will perceive you as someone with a low status. The Arudha Lagna is the primary point of interaction between your mind and the world.
How Is Arudha Lagna Calculated?
To find Arudha Lagna, you have to follow a few simple steps:
Find your Ascendant (Rising Sign) and identify its ruling planet.
Count how many zodiac signs separate your Rising Sign from the sign where its ruling planet is placed.
From your ruling planet's sign, count forward the same number of signs. The sign you arrive at is your Arudha Lagna.
Exceptions
An Arudha cannot fall in the 1st or the 7th house from its original sign. The 1st and the 7th houses from any sign represent Satya or the ultimate truth. As Arudha represents Maya or illusion, it is entirely disconnected from the truth. An illusion cannot coexist with the truth, therefore an Arudha can never fall in the 1st or the 7th house from its beginning point.
If the Arudha falls in the 1st house from the original sign, the 10th house is taken into consideration.
If the Arudha falls in the 7th house from the original sign, then the 4th house is taken into consideration.
