In astrology, every moment is measured by how the Sun and the Moon interact with each other. Their changing distance creates what we call a Tithi, a lunar day. Each month has 30 Tithis, divided equally between the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).
Your Tithi Pravesh happens when this same Sun–Moon distance repeats after one year. The angular distance that existed between the Sun and Moon at your birth becomes the reference point, and when that distance reappears, your new astrological year begins.
This chart, drawn for that exact moment, is used to study the year’s direction, including emotionally, mentally, and circumstantially. It’s one of the most practical techniques in Vedic astrology because it connects mathematics and experience.
What is Tithi Pravesh?
Tithi Pravesh means “entry of the lunar day.” In simple terms, it’s the point when the Sun–Moon relationship in the sky becomes exactly what it was at your birth. The moment that happens, a new cycle starts for you.
A Tithi is not based on the date in a calendar but on how far the Moon has moved away from the Sun. Every 12° of separation forms one Tithi. When the Moon moves away from the Sun, it is called the waxing phase or Shukla Paksha. When it moves back toward the Sun, it is the waning phase or Krishna Paksha. Together, they make up the 30 Tithis of a lunar month, 15 in the waxing half and 15 in the waning half.
So, your Tithi Pravesh happens when the Sun–Moon distance in the sky becomes exactly what it was at your birth, regardless of the calendar date. That chart becomes your Tithi Pravesh chart, your true astrological new year, showing the emotional and mental pattern that will shape the year ahead.
Most people think their year begins when the Sun returns to its natal position (Solar Return), but the Tithi Pravesh considers both luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, together. This gives a far more complete picture because it includes your emotional patterns, not just external events.
The Tithi Pravesh chart is read just like a birth chart, but applies only for one year. It helps identify what kind of year you’re stepping into and whether it brings stability, growth, release, or challenge.
How is Tithi Pravesh Calculated?
The calculation is entirely mathematical and based on the angular distance between the Sun and Moon.
- Find your birth Tithi. - At birth, note the exact degrees of the Sun and the Moon. Subtract the Sun’s position from the Moon’s position. Each 12° difference forms one Tithi. For example, a 0°–12° difference is the 1st Tithi, 12°–24° the 2nd, and so on.
- Identify the same angular distance this year. - Look for the date and time when the Sun–Moon distance becomes the same as your birth Tithi. This can happen before or after your solar birthday, depending on how the Moon moves that year.
- Cast a chart for that moment and location. - This becomes your Tithi Pravesh chart or the foundation for interpreting your year ahead. The planetary positions are frozen at that instant, showing how time will unfold for you over the next twelve months.
- Check the Panchang of that moment. - The weekday (Vara), Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana of that time give additional clues. They act like the background setting of your year. The emotional, spiritual, and practical environment you’ll operate in.
Tithi Pravesh is not a replacement for charts like the Varshaphal or Solar Return. Those systems focus mainly on the Sun, which represents outer life, like your career, status, growth, and public achievements. But human experience isn’t driven by the Sun alone. The Moon governs perception, emotion, and the inner response to events.
When the Sun returns to its natal degree, the solar chart shows what kinds of situations are likely to arise. When the Sun–Moon angle returns to its natal distance, the Tithi Pravesh chart shows how you will process and live through those situations.
This is why two people born on the same day may face similar external circumstances but experience the year very differently.
The 5 Parts of Panchang (used in Tithi Pravesh)
Every Tithi Pravesh chart is read through the lens of the Panchang. Each pillar of the Panchang describes a different layer of time, from the external rhythm of the day to the inner rhythm of the mind. When combined, these five elements define the quality and tone of your year.
- Vara (Weekday)- Every day of the week is ruled by a planet, for example, Sunday by the Sun, Monday by the Moon, Tuesday by Mars, and so on. In Tithi Pravesh, the weekday on which your personal lunar year begins becomes very important because it decides which planet will guide your year’s energy. Why does it matter? The planet ruling that day sets the overall mood of your year, including how you’ll act, what will motivate you, and what kind of lessons you’ll face. For example, if your Tithi Pravesh starts on a Monday, your year follows the Moon’s rhythm. You will be emotionally rich, more focused on family and feelings. If it begins on a Saturday, Saturn becomes your guide. Your life slows down a bit and teaches you patience, structure, and discipline. Vara, or the weekday planet, doesn’t decide what happens, but it shapes how you experience what happens.
- Tithi (Lunar Day) – This is the heart of the chart. It shows how your mind will respond to situations. The Tithi family (Nanda, Bhadra, etc.) tells you the emotional drive behind your choices.
- Nakshatra– At the time of your Tithi Pravesh, the Moon sits in a specific Nakshatra. Each Nakshatra represents a different kind of environment or emotional climate that shapes your mindset during the year. It describes the kind of space you’ll be in, whether it’s a year of learning, connection, responsibility, or change. For example, if your Moon is in Pushya, the year feels grounded, you might focus on stability, family, or commitment. If it’s in Ashwini, the year brings speed, fresh ideas, and a desire to move forward quickly.
- Yoga – Yoga is calculated by adding the exact positions of the Sun and Moon. It shows how smoothly their energies combine, or simply put, whether the year will feel effortless or demand consistent effort. The Sun stands for your will and purpose. The Moon stands for emotions. When they support each other, life flows easily. When they clash, you may feel like your heart and mind want different things.
How does it work? There are 27 Yogas in total. Some bring happiness, peace, and give quick results; others bring slower progress and teach patience. Understanding your Yoga helps you accept your year’s rhythm instead of fighting it.
- Karana – Each Tithi is divided into two halves. These halves are called Karanas, and they describe how you should act to make the most of your time. If the Tithi shows how you feel, the Karana shows what you can do with that feeling.
Why does it matter? Even if timing is right, results depend on how you approach things. Your Karana reveals the kind of effort that will bring success, whether this is a year for starting new things, finishing old ones, negotiating, or simply observing before acting.
There are 11 Karanas in total, and each one carries a particular mindset. For example, Bava and Balava are good for beginnings; Vishti is better for problem-solving; Chatushpada and Naga work best for planning and reflection. Your Karana shows the style of effort that works best for you this year. When you follow that natural rhythm, instead of forcing a different one, things tend to move more easily and productively.
How to Use Your Tithi Pravesh Chart?
Once you know your Tithi Pravesh chart, the question becomes, "How do I use it?"
The answer lies in awareness, not memorizing details.
Your chart shows how time wants to move through you this year.
Some years push you to start new things. Others ask you to slow down, clean up, or finish what’s pending.
Tithi Pravesh helps you recognize which one you’re in, so you stop resisting the phase you’re meant to live.
Instead of reading it like a prediction, treat it like a yearly compass:
- When things feel slow, check if your chart shows a reflective or Saturnian year, where the main lesson is patience.
- When emotions run high, remember your Moon’s Tithi because it guides you to release what's not working out for you anymore.
- When energy surges, act as your tithi supports movement.
You don’t have to analyse all five Panchang parts every time. Just observe your energy pattern. When you feel open, when you retreat, and when decisions come easily.
Conclusion
Tithi Pravesh is like a relationship between the Sun and the Moon, between what you do and how you feel. It reminds you that time isn’t just counted in dates; it’s also felt in moods, energy, and awareness. Your Tithi Pravesh chart helps you live more consciously through the year. You begin to see that growth, stability, reflection, and closure are all part of the same cycle, and each phase has its own value.
Once you understand when your Tithi Pravesh occurs, the next step is to explore what it means for you personally.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Tithi Pravesh chart in astrology?
A Tithi Pravesh chart marks the start of your personal lunar year, your true astrological birthday according to the Moon. It is prepared for the exact moment when the Sun and Moon recreate the same angular relationship they held at the time of your birth. This chart captures how the year will unfold on an emotional, psychological, and spiritual level. It highlights your inner motivations, mindset, and the themes that will shape your personal growth, relationships, and life experiences during the next 12 months.
How is Tithi Pravesh different from a Solar Return?
A Solar Return revolves around the Sun and symbolizes your external world, the visible life events that influence your career, achievements, health, and social standing. Tithi Pravesh, on the other hand, adds the depth of the Moon’s perspective. It reveals what goes on within you, your emotional reactions, intuitive responses, and the way you process experiences. Together, these two charts give a complete picture: the Solar Return shows what happens, and the Tithi Pravesh shows how it feels and what it teaches your soul.
Can Tithi Pravesh predict specific events?
It doesn’t predict exact events like marriage or job changes in a literal sense. Instead, it shows the emotional and karmic context of your experiences. For instance, it can reveal whether the year favors healing, transformation, or new beginnings. Those emotional tones can then be matched with real-life happenings for deeper understanding.
What does a Tithi Pravesh chart reveal?
